Jonathan Harker is an English solicitor and the main narrator of the first episode of the BBC drama Dracula. He travels to Transylvania in 1897 and encounters Count Dracula. When he is invited into his castle, he realises things are not what they seem, especially with the Count.

Biography[]

Early History[]

Little is known about Harker's early history, other than he worked for a large law firm in England.

Dracula[]

In 1897, Jonathan recounts a story of his time with Count Dracula to the sisters of St. Mary's Convent, Budapest - particularly, Agatha Van Helsing.

Harker is sent to the castle of the mysterious Count Dracula, on premise of helping with the purchase of property and the finalising of the contracts associated with such sale. Unbeknownst to Harker, he has been sent to the Count's castle to help him assimilate better into society around him and, more importantly, familiarise him with British culture and society.

Harker begins experiencing ailments during his time with the Count, and he begins ageing quickly. Extraordinarily, the Count begins looking increasingly younger, hinting at something sinister - whilst Harker ages, the Count looks ever the more youthful. Realising that there is something going on with the Count, Harker realises he must do what he can to escape the castle before he meets his death. Harker begins doing everything he can to escape, including exploring potential escape routes from the castle. He is unsuccessful, however, but does discover the Count's experiments, including his attempts to create more of his kind, vampires. He eventually realises what the Count is and attempts to escape through the roof of the castle. Dracula catches him, but Harker is able to escape, fleeing to the convent.

After explaining his story to Sister Agatha - and his unsuspecting fiancé, Mina Murray - Harker is tracked down by the Count, who joins them at the Convent but is unable to enter without an invitation. Ashamed of what he has become, Harker attempts to kill himself after attacking Mina, and everyone is under the impression that he is dead. Dracula reveals, however, that suicide cannot kill vampires, but begs Harker to invite him in. He kills Harker shortly after and assumes his form.
